Tour Of Britain 2015

We celebrated the Tour of Britain passing through Hethersett by drawing a large bicycle on our school field (thank you Mr Maddox) and also recreating our school logo out of PE equipment (well done Tiger class).

I would like to thank Anglia Aerial Photography for producing such amazing photographs.

Hethersett students meet the Bloodhound!

Yesterday (20th May) Year 5 and 6 pupils visited UTC Norwich to experience the Bloodhound Supersonic car.

This was a truly amazing visit! The day comprised of a presentation from our hosts which explained history of land speed record and facts about the Bloodhound. After the initial presentation the children went into workshops to experience 3D printing, building and racing K'nex cars as well as learning interesting details about the car itself including practical demonstrations (and explosions)!

Hethersett VC Junior School - inspiring the next generation of voters!

Today has been an exciting day!  In order to make the General election 'real' for the children, the whole school will be voting for next years House Captians.

Candidates (Children in Year 5) have put together a manifesto and promotional video which is has been viewed by all children.  Each child in the school will then vote for the person they would like to represent their House.

It was a tighly contested election with an excellent representation from each house.  There was also a good turnout at the voting booths with 100% of pupils placing their vote.

We are pleased to be able to announce our new house captains for 2015/2016.

Minibus Launch with Josh Murphy NCFC.

Josh Murphy kicks off a bright future for Hethersett VC Junior School

Speedy Norwich City winger Josh Murphy was delighted to help the pupils of Hethersett VC Junior School to drive into a bright future with the arrival of their new minibus.  Surrounded by an eager group fresh from their netball lesson, in which he had taken part, Josh cut a ribbon and climbed inside.  Headteacher Matthew Parslow-Williams thanked representatives of the school’s PTA for their hard work throughout the year in helping to raise money towards the purchase of the minibus, and members of the governing body were pleased to recognise the ways in which the minibus will  enable children in the school to access a wide range of opportunities.  Representatives of the Community Sports Foundation, which is closely involved with the teaching of PE in the school, presented a plaque to recognise their partnership with Hethersett VC Junior School.  As Josh signed a photo for each of the children their smiles showed that they will remember his visit, and their smart minibus, for a long time.

Destination Democracy Day

Destination Democracy Day

Children in Year 5 and 6 were treated today to a Horrible Histories style production from Springboard East. The workshop provided pupils with the opportunity to find out more about Parliament and the history of democracy.

999 Years of History, 2 Actors, 1 Vote.
Everett's boring night in front of the TV turns into an unexpected adventure when time travelling professor Dr. Hugo Hourglass interrupts the election night coverage. A madcap story of power struggles, conspiracy, protest and sacrifice, charting key events in the history of Parliament and British democracy.

The performance was followed by two interactive workshops. The first looked at the campaign to improve the lot of children working in Victorian Britain. In the 2nd workshop the children meet a suffragette and are enrolled in the Votes For Women campaign.

The show was absolutely fantastic and was thoroughly enjoyed by all children.

The Bishop of Thetford the Rt Rev Alan Winton leading Collective Worship.

The window design features the new school logo as the central piece.   Within the branches of the values tree you can see everything that is special about our school including our core values.

The Dedication Prayer
Dear God, we thank you for Hethersett School: for teachers and helpers, governors and friends, but most of all we thank you for all the children who come here to learn and to grow.
Today we wish to celebrate and dedicate this beautiful stained glass window, with its rich colours, and striking images of the values by which we want to live and work together.
We pray that this window may be a source of joy and inspiration to everyone who walks past it.
As the light of the sun shines through this glass bringing to life the colours and images, so may God’s love God’s light shine through us to build a school community of respect and responsibility, of truthfulness and friendship, of creativity and compassion.
So, Lord God, we dedicate this window to your praise and glory in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Mark Wood - Polar Explorer Visit.

We have been very, very fortunate to have Mark Wood, polar explorer visit us today. Mark Wood is an established polar explorer and adventurer based in the UK. In 2011/2012, Mark attempted to ski solo and unsupported to the North and South Geographic Poles in an incredible feat of physical and mental endurance.

Mark has a passion for the environment. Through Skype, films, talks and educational programs, Mark encourages the need to explore.

We are also very excited about being able to support Mark's chosen charity Hire a Hero.  Next year, Mark and his team will be embarking on a new adventure to the Himalayas where they will climb Mount Everest.  Mark will take a picture of our school logo from the top of the World!   www.hireaherouk.org
We would like to thank Mark for taking the time to visit our school today.

Look out for us in the Norwich Evening News and also the EDP!

Maths Setting at Hethersett VC Junior School

Why do we no longer set in maths?

In previous years our school set in each year group for maths.  It was decided in summer 2014 that we would no longer take this approach as we believed our children would make better progress in mixed ability classes.  We do however set for maths in Year 6, this is due to the Level 6 curriculum which is taught in this year group.  Our decision was based on research by leading educationalists, the link below links to a copy of a report highlighting the benefits of non-setting.
